Nurturing talent
For nearly 135 years, Nottingham Operatic Society has nurtured the talents of thousands of performers and backstage professionals. Many of our members—past and present—have gone on to enjoy successful careers in the West End and beyond.
Illustrious members
Our most renowned member was Constance Shacklock, who enjoyed a distinguished international operatic career. She famously created the role of the Mother Abbess in the original 1960 London production of The Sound of Music, collaborating directly with composer Richard Rodgers. Constance later served as President of the Society.
We are committed to providing everyone with the opportunity to participate in and enjoy the experience of performing or working behind the scenes on productions.
How to Join
To join the Society, all prospective on-stage members are asked to complete a New Members audition. We understand that this can feel a little daunting, but our Cast Committee are very approachable and will do everything they can to make the experience a positive one.
The audition includes both singing and dialogue, even if you are auditioning primarily as a dancer, and will usually last around 10–15 minutes.
Please prepare a musical theatre song and bring the sheet music with you to perform for the committee. An accompanist will be provided on the day.
You will also be taught a short piece of basic movement in groups, which you will then perform for the committee.
The Cast Committee want you to do your best and understand that auditions can be nerve-racking. If needed, you are welcome to stop and restart or repeat part of your audition.

Acting Membership: £150.00
Concession Acting Membership: (Student/Over 60/Unwaged) £80.00
Non-Acting Membership: £60.00
Monthly standing order payments are available.
